The only way to legally protect yourself is through Health Canada's Marihuana Medical Access Regulations (MMAR) program. To qualify for the Marihuana Medical Access Program (MMAP) you need to have Form A and either Form B1 (for Category 1 conditions) or Form B2 (for Category 2 conditions) signed by your specialist or family doctor depending on what condition you are looking to use medicinal marijuana for.
